TripAdvisor acquires EveryTrail

February 3, 2011

Newton, Mass.-based travel information site TripAdvisor has acquired Palo Alto, Calif.-based EveryTrail for an undisclosed sun. EveryTrail makes a GPS-enabled platform that can be used to create guides for mobile devices, officials said.

The EveryTrail technology will be used to add features to the TripAdvisor mobile offering, which includes travel reviews and opinions. The TripAdvisor mobile function launched in March of last year.

Now an operating company of Expedia Inc., TripAdvisor was acquired in 2005 for $200 million by InterActiveCorp which that same year spun out its travel business as Expedia. TripAdvisor, founded in 2000, has a long history of growth by acquisition. In 2007 alone, it bought Boston-based Smarter Travel Media LLC, the operator of smartertravel.com and bookingbuddy.com, along with Seattle-based SeatGuru.com, Canada-based TravelPod.com and London’s Travel-Library.com. In 2008, it took a majority stake in FlipKey Inc., the Boston-based operator of a website focused on vacation rental property reviews.

According to company officials, TripAdvisor Media Group, which is run by TripAdvisor LLC, has 17 travel brands that draw more than 50 million unique monthly visitors.
